Graphics Tutorial Continued

Step 2 The Lines

Next we will create the black and yellow line along the side of the aircraft.
(See Figure 11)

Figure 11

Again we will work on the front part of the fuselage first using one method.  When we have completed this we will then try another method to apply these lines to the rear of the aircraft.  There is always alternative and we should frequently experiment with PSP to get the best effects for our textures.

Tool to be used: Line

Lets do the black line first as this should be the easiest to do.  We need to place this just under the door frame and run it along the length of the fuselage area – do not worry too much about crossing the wing joint area as this will be covered by the wing when the model is created.   So a nice straight line about 3 pixels thick from front to back along the point just under the door.  We have a convenient guideline by running the line along where the belly joins the body of the fuselage.

Select the Line Tool – in the Tools Control box – set Line Type to Normal – set Width to 3

Now select the colour – click on the top square of the Colour Selector and a colour palette will come up – select BLACK – click OK.

Now we draw our line.  (Figure 12)  Be sure to get it straight – spend some time on this as trying to correct a crooked line can take a lot of effort in retrospect so it is best to get it right the first time.  Use Ctrl Z to undo if you first line or two are crooked.

Tool to be used: Shapes

Now the yellow line – this will be a bit different as it is a thick line and we do not want to eliminate details such as doors.  So this time we will use the Shapes Tool to draw a hollow box along the fuselage.  Select Shapes Tool and check the Tools Control box – set Shape to Rectangle, set Style to Outline and Select Outline Width to 1 (one)

Click on the top square for our colour and the colour palette will come up – select Orange on the Ring of colour – then select a strong orange colour in the square inside the ring. Click OK

Now zoom in on the nose of the aircraft so that you can start the rectangle where the top of the black line joins the nose cone – click and hold the mouse button and pull slowly to the right – the image should scroll with you – when you get to the end push up by twenty pixels – see bottom left numbers (3rd set) for assistance here.

Filling In the colour – Tool/s to be used: Wand  and Retouch

Now click on the Magic Wand Tool – Set the Tools Control box Tolerance to 65 and move the cursor to the white area within the orange boxed area.  Click, then hold down the shift key and click on each white area inside of the boxed area along the fuselage.

We now need to darken the area so that our colour retouch can take a richer effect. Select Menu Item ColoursAdjustBrightness/Contrast – set the Brightness to –40 (minus 40) and the Contrast to 8 – click OK

Click on the Retouch Tool – set the Tools Control box Retouch Mode to Colour to Target

Holding the mouse button down – rub over the highlight area repeatedly with the colour orange and it will slowly mature into a dark orange/yellow type line but all of the detail will still be there.  Make sure that the colour is even across the whole line area.  Zoom out to check that you have done the whole line area. (Figure 13)

Now we will do the lines for the second part of the fuselage. Lets do the black line (3 pixels thick again) first, same line settings as before, starting at the rear and draw up to the point where the wing root area is. (Figure 14)

Figure 14

Next the yellow line. This time we will use another technique to create the yellow line.  This method is a little better than the previous method as we do not leave a border around the texture and we learn to use another PSP 5 tools.

Tool/s to be used: Selection  and Dropper  and Retouch

With the Selection Tool click at the top right of the black line you just created and drag left until you reach the end of the fuselage – then push up 20 pixels - see bottom left numbers (3rd set) for assistance.

We have highlighted the area we want to work with – We now need to darken the area so that our colour retouch can take a richer effect. Select Menu Item ColoursAdjustBrightness/Contrast – set the Brightness to –40 (minus 40) and the Contrast to 8 – click OK

To re-establish the orange colour that we want to use – select the Dropper Tool – move the cursor over the edge of the orange rectangle you did for the first part of the fuselage and click – we now have the same orange colour for the work with the rear of the aircraft.

(Figure 15)

Clean Up

Tool to be used: Paint  and Dropper

There will be a little piece of the rear section that will need to be filled in to finish off.  Use the Dropper Tool to select the orange colour of the area just retouched (Figure 15) slightly darker orange than the one we used.  This change occurs because we darkened the area before retouching with the orange.

Then use the Paint Tool to paint in the area – be careful not to over paint the area and not to touch the elevator surface. (Figure 15)
