Welcome to my So far there are Three Tutorials available including the
full Graphics tutorial from Computer Pilot Magazine
Volume 6 issue 4 - written by me on request from Computer Pilot.
The concept of aircraft texture painting, at it's fundamental level, is the
learning and understanding of the graphics program and tools required to
access and modify existing textures within FS2004 or FS2002
It is important that you understand your paint program very well before you start tying to use all of that power for creating or editing textures because I assure you, from personal experience, without the expending of time and effort to know what your paint program is doing to the image then you will undoubtedly have difficulty with aircraft texture painting. Sorry to be a bit negative here - but it is very important - if you compare it to flying in FS2004, you cannot achieve quality flying until you understand the program and all of the necessary steps for start up, takeoff, flight, approach, landing and parking. The very same applies to painting textures - each step is precise and is critical to successfully completing the next step. So a lot of time is required to learn and understand the capabilities and limitations of the graphics tools you are using.
The
most basic principle that I would like to impart is to
hasten slowly
- do a little bit at a time -
edit, save, test,
and when successful then do another bit. In doing this you will end up
with something meaningful - if you attack it at full throttle without planning
or understanding of the intricacies then there is undoubtedly something going
to go wrong.
(1) BASIC Tutorial - a very basic tutorial on how I do the Reflective Effects is available on the Basics page. (2) COMPLETE Tutorial - The Computer Pilot (Issue 6 volume 4) article on Painting Aircraft Textures - the entire 6 part tutorial on aircraft painting is now available online for your guidance on how to paint aircraft textures. (Computer Pilot has graciously given me permission to reproduce the article online that I wrote for them in May 2002). (3) ADD Tutorial - a very comprehensive tutorial and some excellent cut and paste on how to ADD additional textures to the existing aircraft that come with FS2002. This article is by Neal Truitt and is on the Add Textures page. Happy simming - if anyone wants to add more to this area please feel free
to contact me
RECOMMENDATION I am compelled to recommend to you a Flight Sim Graphic tool that has come to my notice. This outstanding program is known as FS Repaint.
I have absolutely no hesitation in commending and recommending this product to any person who is considering doing repaints - the price is outstanding - the tools are simply excellent - the integration to other environments are smooth and efficient and last but not least the 3D instant updated views whilst you tinker are the best thing I have seen, ever, for flight simming from an aircraft repainter's perspective. Disclaimer: It is important to note that I have no affiliation or association whatsoever with this program - I am in no way rewarded for this recommendation nor do I expect any obligations from Abacus. I make this recommendation to the flight sim community because I believe it is an excellent tool for repainting aircraft and by recommending it I am providing a service to that community.
Aircraft textures on the CD packaged version of the ABACUS FS-Repaint program were proudly created by myself on request from that organisation. No formal affiliations or remunerations were involved in this task just an opportunity to present some of my artwork in a Printed Media.
